keep an eye out…

i wanna bolt. no, literally.

i wanna bolt. no, literally.

hey, for those of you who spend time at blow up (and actually … for anyone who’s into couture party accessories in general), we wanted to let you know that our girl franchesca (miss blow up usa finalist back in january) just launched a new blog site featuring some of her eyewear and headpiece designs. all unique, all hand-made, all fierce.

button your lips. err, eyes.

button your lips. err, eyes.

franchesca makes all of her stuff by hand, along with another one of our girls, ari. they literally use everyday stuff like bolts and screws and buttons to make “accoutrement” that really stand out on the dance floor. they’re just a killer pair of ladies who love the concept of expressing who you are and decided to do something about it. check ‘em out if you have a chance.

our franchesca

our francesca

outside of the designs, i was super touched by franchesca’s first post on the site because she gives a lot of credit to to blow up, in terms of finding a place where she could express and be herself. *heart strings* i’ve always felt like blow up was a lot more than just a party, and her post says a lot in confirming that. thanks for sharing it, girl.

xox,
ava

apocalypse now

vintage yummy

hell, yeah! congrats to my girl rachel lena esterline and her friend brooke candy, who just opened their dream boutique online after much blood, sweat, tears (and time) spent in the name of style and high fashion. the e-shop, american apocalypse, is full of ridiculously hot hand-picked vintage stuff for girls and guys. love it! and love seeing my friends do amazing things …

card-carrying member, mod squad

i met rachel at an event for bpm magazine at mezzanine – she was styling, I was modeling runway. (incidentally, mezzanine is also where I met my friend rahel gerrits who later married bertie pearson, who happened to be in paradise boys with Jeffrey … but i digress.)

anyway, as life is full of “come-full-circle” moments, I was thrilled to model with rachel again for the AA debut (hmmm … might need to be careful about using that acronym!) we did the shoot in the basement of harputs union. it was super fun, and awesome to see some of the amazing finds they’ve gotten their hands on first-hand, one of which they recently lent out to teen vogue. *super* hot.

en vogue. literally

ok, just had to share. check for AA’s latest finds on their facebook page. they’re getting tons of love already, judging by the early reviews.

oh, and happy “30-ish” b-day, rach! Your secret is safe with me.

ava

johann johannsson

my ticket

My ticket!

so, this is late in coming, but I totally have to put it out there…

last month, my friend marcus (a la avant garde) invited me to check out this icelandic composer johann johannsson at great american music hall in SF. think heavy instrumental string craziness – beautiful and sometimes even dark – sort of like sigur ros (some other iceland folk), which i’ve have loved since merkley introduced me to it. it’s the kind of music you sit with. it was a really memorable night, for so many reasons.

first, some background. sigur ros is super special to me because awhile back they did a video that featured perlan, this amazing special-needs theatre group (also from iceland, if you’re catching the trend). that’s totally special to me because my sister, yasmin, has downs. the fact that they reached out to that group, and showed how incredibly beautiful they are, is *so* touching to me.

ok, so: enter ava, already emotional just due to the fact that sigur ros and johann are tight …the night only got more memorable.

for one, because marcus rocks, he arranged for us to meet up with johann for drinks before the show. totally cool just to hear him talk about his muse and get that “reykjavik” vibe that no other country in the world seems to create. it was also cool to see that even though he looks super serious (and writes super dark/serious music), johann is quite a funny guy. I mean, yeah – I got that he was alt-genius from the whole IBM 1401, A User’s Manual thing, but *love* seeing that kind of depth in people, and artists especially. later, we got to hang out backstage and meet everyone.

Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson

Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson

second, and almost just as special: this was johann’s first west coast gig *ever* – meaning I actually got to chill with him on his first time in california. I don’t know why, but it always feels super special to share those kinds of firsts with people.

so, I digress. the point is: the music was rad, the set was ridiculously beautiful, and thanks to marcus, i am a new fan of johann johannsson, 4VR. check him out if you have time (this is directed at Jeffrey, too – he wasn’t able to join us. (watch videos here, check him out on pandora here, visit him on myspace here, and learn about him on wikipedia here. i made that way to easy for you. …)

thanks so much to marcus for a super night, and thanks to both johann and sigur ros for making music that means something.

xox,
ava

Thread Fashion Show Preview

Thread Fashion Show

Damn, there’s some fun stuff happening this weekend. Next up: Thread Fashion Show June 19 (part of San Francisco Design Week). Not only is it going to be an amazingly fun event, but both Ava and I will be involved this year (Ava as MC and me as DJ)! What could be better than a party that combines fashion shows, up and coming designers, and cool music, in San Francisco!

Shop. Listen. Love.

I know Ava is really stoked about being the MC of this year’s event, having spent time as a model and photographer, now she’ll be announcing the a fashion show. I can personally attest to the fact that she’s already started picking out some cool looks to show off throughout the event. (She’s gonna be changing along with the models in between shows – they really had to twist her arm on that one.) Some designers we’re excited about For Love and Lemons and Luxe, as well as all of the eco-conscious designers that will be at the show this year.

I’m just happy to set the tone and pace on the catwalk. I love to DJ fashion shows, and used to DJ them all the time in college when I was a clothing design major, and it’s awesome to get back into the groove of style and sound …

Non mainstream / Ultra-cool
We love the Thread events because it’s one of those rare events that truly highlights local fashion and art giving hot indie artists and designers who haven’t yet hit the mainstream some awesome exposure. None of us would make it without opportunities like that, and we’re stoked to be part of it.

Ava and I will also be hosting the show’s official after party at Club 1994 Saturday night. Attend Thread, and get in free (before 10:30 p.m., or enjoy 2 bucks off before 11). See you there …

Put these in your mouth …

A mini piece of heaven, with icing on top

You might not know this, but our buddy Brandon Arnovick (aka The Bastard Prince and part of The Rondo Brothers) also moonlights as a cup-cake connoisseur as owner of Mission Minis. (Yes, the Bastard Prince enjoys mini cupcakes – sorry, Brandon, don’t mean to kill your image with the ladies .

Anyway, just a shout out that if you have a hankering for some sweet and sticky cupcake goodness, you should give Mission Minis a try. Our favorite: Ruby Red Velvet. Clearly, I’m no scientist, but I’m pretty sure it could cure cancer, that’s how good it is.

We love Mission Minis. (And we love Brandon. And that has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he makes the best cupcakes ever. Seriously. It has nothing to do with it at all …)

Jeffrey

Special thanks to Marke B at the San Francisco Bay Guardian for this week’s article about SF promoters, including Ava and me. It was a super honor to be included in the piece, along with parties like Bootie and Barracuda. (Not to mention, to be included on such a hot cover – check it out if you have time!)

Grab a stack for your reading pleasure.

Press Photo Shoot

WOW – you would not believe the miracle Ava worked yesterday to pull together a hot photo shoot for an upcoming press piece – all within 24 hours.

We got a call about being featured in an exciting article about SF promoters (more details coming soon). Only problem: We weren’t in SF for them to shoot the photo. Enter Ava, who called on some friends to make it happen.

David Espinoza (photog) was super awesome to work with, and V (stylist) brought some creative-slash-outlandish outfits I would have never thought to pair together myself (red PRADA ski pants and lumberjack shirt anyone?) In general, I tend to look pretty awkward in about 80 percent of test shots, but yesterday was definitely an exception, David was super cool and got us feeling at ease. It was such a last minute shoot I would have settled for anything we could have cobbled together, but Ava got together such a great group of people, it turned it into one of the best shoots I’ve ever done.

Above all else it was a killer time, and I’m thrilled it all came together so quickly. After four hours of shooting, we literally raced back for a family dinner party with my niece and nephew, and friends. (say it with me: awwwww.)

Cole and Uncle Jeffrey showing us what real men are all about.

In all seriousness, outside of Ava, I don’t know anyone else who could call some friends and organize a hot shoot with amazing stylists, hair and make-up, camera man – professional photo studio … all the shit – in 24 hours. And in a new city no less.

Before I sign off, I want to give another shout out to all of my new friends who made it happen: Patrick Heig (who introduced us to David E.), and Alisha Trimble (who hooked us up with hot stylist V Vernard. Thanks for your help! You guys rock!

xox,

Jeffrey

This is only a tiny recap of yesterday – we’ve got a bunch of awesome photos coming in the next week so check the blog soon
