Fools Gold vs Stones Throw at BLOW UP

Hello Music Lovers + friends, Saturday August 7th something very special is going down! One fine evening of “disco, boogie and house music” by some of the best DJs around.

This is a very special tour and we feel really thrilled to be hosting this out on the bay at Kelly’s Mission Rock. Though Blow Up is typically known for having wild banging electro madness (and don’t worry that will be upstairs) for this special event, we’ll be rocking it outdoors with some soul, funk, and boogie by the water.

Thread Fashion Show Preview

Thread Fashion Show

Damn, there’s some fun stuff happening this weekend. Next up: Thread Fashion Show June 19 (part of San Francisco Design Week). Not only is it going to be an amazingly fun event, but both Ava and I will be involved this year (Ava as MC and me as DJ)! What could be better than a party that combines fashion shows, up and coming designers, and cool music, in San Francisco!

Shop. Listen. Love.

I know Ava is really stoked about being the MC of this year’s event, having spent time as a model and photographer, now she’ll be announcing the a fashion show. I can personally attest to the fact that she’s already started picking out some cool looks to show off throughout the event. (She’s gonna be changing along with the models in between shows – they really had to twist her arm on that one.) Some designers we’re excited about For Love and Lemons and Luxe, as well as all of the eco-conscious designers that will be at the show this year.

I’m just happy to set the tone and pace on the catwalk. I love to DJ fashion shows, and used to DJ them all the time in college when I was a clothing design major, and it’s awesome to get back into the groove of style and sound …

Non mainstream / Ultra-cool
We love the Thread events because it’s one of those rare events that truly highlights local fashion and art giving hot indie artists and designers who haven’t yet hit the mainstream some awesome exposure. None of us would make it without opportunities like that, and we’re stoked to be part of it.

Ava and I will also be hosting the show’s official after party at Club 1994 Saturday night. Attend Thread, and get in free (before 10:30 p.m., or enjoy 2 bucks off before 11). See you there …

coffee wars: sf vs nyc

So the first thing I compare whenever I spend an extended amount of time in a new city is COFFEE. I love good coffee and I am pretty spoiled living in San Francisco, so much so that I can’t even drink most regular coffee, especially the sorta bodega coffee and Stump Town that a lot of New Yorkers seem to be happy with (at least until recently).

I don’t think I’m alone here. Everyone seems to be much more particular about coffee… over 50% of the population drink some kind of coffee… and I think it is the second most traded commodity in the world. crazy!

San Francisco is the epicenter for gourmet coffee: blue bottle, ritual, or Four Barrel is severed all over the city… so when you’re walking around sf, you’re likely to  stumble upon an excellent coffee shop or one-of-a-kind place like Philz coffee that serves hand made drinks with mint leaves.

About 3 years back, I would travel to New York 5 or 6 times a year and a good cup of coffee was remarkably hard to find. On Chowhound.com there are many complaints about the lack of good coffee choices in NY. However, my east coast friends had promised me things are much better now, so I was very curious to find out for myself.

this used to be the only spot I knew to get good coffee in ny

East Village spots I like
Abraco is very Blue Bottle-esque (I know that sounds so lame haha) and has a serious caffeine kick. The wait is really long, but it seems to be worth it if you have the time.

Tarallucci e Vino has been my go-to spot, it serves Lavazza Italian coffee that is one of my favorites, they have great pastries + no extended waits!

Porto Rico is the only place that has been around awhile that I like, though none of my coffee lover friends like this place, it has also been one of my long time favs for an double americano, not mind blowing, but not much wait and good coffee.

some more suggestions I haven’t tried yet–Zibetto, Gimme! Coffee, and Mudd.

And here are some nerdy links you can check out if you like to dork out like me. haha

DatA is coming

DatA – Rapture

All the way from across the sea to be with us in San Francisco…datA is coming!!!

We can’t wait! This is going to be a super fun sexy time with international super star DatA. Get your futuristic disco funk on at the Paradise Lounge!

Like Calvin Harris, his closest musical relative, Guillon aka DatA reminds us more of Chic’s groove, the classiness of Shalamar and the dance-inspired sound of Quincy Jones, than the currently trendy “take-no-prisoners” techno sound, which is very refreshing on the dancefloor especially if you don’t like testosterone fueled fist pumping being passed off as dancing.

As always Jeffrey + Ava will ensure that this special night with DatA will be one to remember.

SF Station is even giving away a pair of tickets! Just go here to enter.
